Waverley ■will drop out of the Wellington-Nelson-Mo-tueka trade, and will be succeeded in that service on Thursday by the s.s, Wairau. The
Waverley takes up her former running tomorrow to Nelson and the West Coast, her local agents being Messrs. W. and G. Turnbull and Co. THE MIMIRO. To-day the Tyser liner Mimiro arrived at Auckland from London via Australian ports. When she has completed discharge ot her cargo at Wellington, where she should arrive about the 3rd December, she will commence loading. Further cargo will be taken in at other North Island ports, and the vessel will finally sail for London about the thTrd week in December. A SHIPMENT OF SALT. When the Maoriland Steamship Company's s.s. Ennerdale has discharged her friettht at Adelaide sho proceeds to Edithbuvg and there loads salt for Wellington and Napier. FIVE MONTHS AT SE\. Yesterday afternoon the barque Caracciolo was berthed at the Wool Wliarf. The vessel has come from Marseilles after a 148 days' voyage, and shows unmistakable signs in marine growth, rust, etc., of her long sojourn at Sea. Captain Dodero considers that his ship has covered the course in reasonable time. He states that it took him about a week to pass the Straits of Gibraltar, and then calm to favourable weather prevailed until Tasmania was at hand. Captain Dodero here calculated upon a continuance of good sailing conditions. But contrary to his expectations a cyclone sprang up and gave his charge a severe buffetting. The barque was constrained to sail before the wind, and was driven as far south as 40 degrees. At times the weather moderated, and then came away with renewed vigour until the vessel neared the New Zealand coast. The first land sighted was the peak of Cape Egmont; thence the remainder of the voyage was plain sailing. The Caracciolo has a cargo of tiles for discharge at this port and at Auckland. SUMMER SERVICE. About the middle of next month the Union Company will re-commission the Penguin to assist tho Pateena in the passenger traffic in the Wellington-Picton-Nelson service. During tho busy season the company will have five vessels, viz— the Pateena, Penguin, Arahura, Mapourika, and Rotoiti all plying across the stru.it. The last-named vessel leaving here on Thursdays will make Picton and Nelson calls while en route to Now Plymouth and Onehunga. Tho Arahura, leaving hate on Saturday evenings, will call at Nelson only while on her way to the West Coast, and the Ma. pourika, leaving on Tuesdays for the West Coast, visits both ports. NEW ZEALAND OIL FOR FUEL. The Petroleum World in a reference to the annual report of the New Zealand Mines Department on the subject of oil-bearing fields, says:— "This is most satisfactory, because, Quite apart from the Imperial aspect of these developments, it is recognised that New Zealand enjoys exceptional geographical advantages m relation to the markets of the Far East and the antipodes, and has a climate in which work can bo carried on all tho jear round. Wherever oil is produced at reasonable expense a market exists, and New .Zealand hopes to get a large share of the crude oil trade of the Southern Hemisphere. Enquiries in New Zealand show that coastal, intercolonial, and Home boats would use a home-produced oil fuel, for it is in the antipodes that the use of oil fuel on board steamers makes for economy." -It is reported from Boston, says the Sydney Daily Telegraph, that over a hundred American sailing vessels are laid up at that port, owing principally to the unsatisfactory condition of the markets in Argentina. Most of the vessels have been lying at Boston for several months. Owing to a mishap to her foremast the Kotuku had to return to Port Chalmers after she bad set out on her northern trip Her cargo is being brought by the Corinna. The Wanaka has left Auckland for Limestone Island, where she loads cement for this port. The Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's s.s. Matatua, from London, via Auckland, is expected to leave the latter port for Wellington on Saturday next, and is due here on the aionday following. From this port she proceeds to Bluff.
