SUBURBAN COUNCILS.
LAST NIGHT'S MEETINGS. PETONE. Last evening's meeting of the Petone Borough Council was attended by the ■Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) and Councillors Coles, Short, Young, 'Harding, Smithy Lodder, Southgate, Castle, and Colquhoun. Councillor Coles was appointed delegate to the Charitable Aid Board's annual election, and che Mayor to the Hospital Board s meeting. * ' The Department of Lands notified that a 25 link strip of land had been reserved for drainage purposes between Patrick and Manchester streets. Permission was also given to the council to sink a hole as requested, on the understanding that proper precautions were taken for the protection of stock, and, furtuer, that the council would be neld liable for any damage caused Dy tne sinking of the hole. The letter was received, and thanks oidered to be sent. This means that the work of inaugurating the eastern drainage scheme can also be proceeded with. In view of the near approach of the election of members for tho Board of Benevolent Trustees, the committee of the Society Tor the Protection of Women and Children suggested the appointment of Mis o M. E. Richmond in place 'of Mrs. Darvall, resigned. It was decided to support her election. A signed copy of the Joint Traniway's Committee's report was received from the To\vn Clerk of the Lowe* Hutt, requesting that the same should be adopted. Should the report meet with the approval of the council he would draft the petition required to be sent to the Minister for Internal Affairs, as suggested in the report, and forward the same to the council for approval. The communication was received. Notification was received trom the Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs to tne effect that an alteration was to be made 111 the Petone Borough boundaries so as to include a portion of the Hutt County Council's area, upon which the" Gear Company's manure works now stand. The Commissioner of Crown 'Lands forwarded schedules of "thirds" and "fourths" amounting to £78 8s 2d, which had accrued in the Korokoro district. The Under-Secretary for Lands intimated that the council's application for leave to attach the moneys of certain native owners who had failed to pay their rates and to otherwise enforce the judgment had been held over pending settlement by the Native Land Court of the question as to the amount of compensation which should be paid by the Education Department for the portion of land recently acquired for a school site. The matter was referred to a sub-com-mittee already set up. One case of scarlet rever was reported. It was decided to convey a hearty vote ol thanks to the Hon. T. K. Macdonald for absistance rendered in connection with the passage of the Hutt Valley Tramways Aci.
