HUTT ROSE SHOW.
Exhibitors at the Hutt Valley Horticultural Society's rose show, to be held at the Hutt Town Hall to-morrow, are finally reminded that entries close at 8 to-night at Johnson's. Mr. E. D. Woodward, the honorary secretary, reports that all arrangements have been completed, and given fine weather a large number of visitors may be expected to take advantage of the half-holiday and spend a pleasant afternoon among the roses. The show will be opened at 3 p.m., and will remain open in the evening as .well.
The postal authorities advise that the Brindisi mail, which arrived in Auckland by the s.s. Manuka yesterday, will reach Wellington by the Manawatu express to-night. Messrs. Gilruth and Reakes, of the Agricultural Department, returned from the South by the Maori yesterday. Messrs. A. L. Wilson, and Co. report a large attendance at the sale of the Colway Estate in their rooons on Saturday evening. The bidding was spirited for numerous sections, but the buyers and sellers were at variance as to prices. The auctioneers report that the following sections were sold : — Section 10, Jas. Battersby, £85; section 11, G. A. Peacock, £105 ; section 16, Jas. Battersby, £95; section 30, G. E. Heenan, £95; section 31, G. A. Drammond, £90; section 32, W. G. Kawdon, £90 ; section 33, D. J. Anderson, £90 ; section 78, D. J. Anderson, £105 ; section 95, J. Brown, £95 ; section 90, W. E. Nicholas, £101 ; lection 91, W. E. Nicholas, £101; section 92, E. Battersby, £87 10s. Total, £1139 10s. Offers are in for several others. An advertisement in another part of this issue directs attention to a group of three sections facing the main road. Late enquiries seem to confirm the rumour that legal difficulties against the carrying of no-license in Wellington South may arise. The Licensing Act, it appears, makes provision for one licensing district (Wellington East, North, and Central) in Wellington, and in the absence of any specific reference in the Act a doubt has arisen as to whether the new electorate of Wellington South for the purposes of a local option poll was adequately described by notice in the Gazette. The point is a very fine one.
