CUSTOMS AND EXCISE.

The Customs duties collected at the various ports of New Zealand during the September quarter amounted to £818,742, compared with £867,842 for the corresponding quarter of 1907. The summary shows :— General tariff, £791,189 (£851,609); preferential tariff, £26,490 (£16.,100); South African, £1063 (£133.). The excise duties for the quarter totalled £26,495, as against £26,138 for the September quarter of 1907. Beer produced £25,517 (£24,491).
