CUSTOMS AND EXCISE.
The Customs duties collected at the various ports of New Zealand during the September quarter amounted to £818,742, compared with £867,842 for the corresponding quarter of 1907. Following are some of the principal items, the figures for 1907 being given in paren theses :— Spirits, £159,464 (£154,545) ; cigars and snuff, £6378 (£5890); cigarettes, £34,249 (£31,824); manufactured tobacco, £99,763 (£93,879) ; wine, £9650 (£9921) ; ale, beer, etc., £6653 (£6527) ; ?;oods by weight : general tariff, £46,848 £59, 43b),- preferential taiiff, £1230 (£987) ; goods ad valorem : general tariff, £378,328 (£394.636); preferential tariff, £24,168 (£14,468) ; other duties : general lariff, £32,368 (£29,7401; pioferential tariff, £920 (£645); pai-cels post, £13,648 (£15,946). The summary shows :— General tariff, £791,189 (£851,609); preferential tariff, £26,490 (£16.,100); South African, £1063 (£133.). The excise duties for the quarter totalled £26,495, as against £26,138 for the September quarter of 1907. Beer produced £25,517 (£24,491).
