! Reference was made at a meeting of the Hospital Trustees, by the chairman, to the scarcity of money amongst people who- owed debts to the institution. Ihe collector reported that he had experienced more than usual difficulty in his work of late. In respect of old debts, the trustees resolved to write off ac- | counts for maintenance due by persons whose whereabouts were now unknown or whose financial positions were now hopeless. The totals were large. For the year 1905 and thereabout 31136 0s 6d was written off, :snd m addition £512 2s 7d was struck off, mostly accounts due in the year now current. ' Late yesterday afternoon the pohcu received information of the sudden d-eafch at 4.20 p.m. of a married woman, Isabel Braund, wife of Mr. W. Braund, an officer on one of the Union CompanyJs steamers. Mrs. Braund had been an inmate- of a Wellington private hospital for some days. By some means or other, it is stated, she obtained two small bottles of nitric acid from the surgery in the hospital and drank the contents. This was on Sunday. Dr. Herbert was summoned, but the- woman lingered on for a time and died yesterday afternoon. An inquest will be held at the Morgue at 4.30 this afternoon. To-morrow afternoon at 3 o'clock Mr. J. G. W. Aitken will open the sixteenth annual sale of work promoted by St. James's Presbyterian Church. "From the- Cape to Zambesi" is the title of Rev! David Russell's illustrated lecture to be given in the ST.M.C.A. Hall on Friday evening next. Mr. Russell has spent thirty years in South Africa, and possesses an intimate know* ledge of that country. Mr. Angus J. M'Curdy has beep nominated as a candidate for the Mungaroa riding at the Hutt County election. There- are to-day 103 inmates of the - Ohiro Home, of whom 73 are men. Members of the New Zealand Educational Institute interviewed the Prime Minister this morning, and urged that the departmental reading of the amended Education Act should more appreciably approach the teachers' view. They advanced arguments which appealed recently in the Post, and Sir Joseph Ward repeated his promise to confer with the Hon. G. Fowlds and other members of the Cabinet. A bankruptcy petition by Bernard Hall against James Joseph Cronin, of Wellington, indent agent, was this morning mentioned before Mr. Justice Cooper. Mr. Toogood for the petitioning creditor said that his client wished the. petition to be withdrawn, and the order' appointing the Official Assignee receiver discharged. His Honour asked : "What does the Official Assignee say to ■that?" Mr. Toogood said he understood 'that the Official Assignee was perfectly willing. The matter v/as not arranged until five o'clock last night, and counsel had not time to communicate with, the Official Assignee to get his consent. Mr. ■Cook for the debtor told the court that the Assignee had no objection to tho course suggested, but lie wanted his ';osts paid. The matter was allowed to stand down until the afternoon in ordor fco permit of the Official Assignee's consent to the summons for adjudication being withdrawn. * The Marine Department has been advised that a ship's hatch 7 feet 10 inches long and 1 foot 10 inches broad, apparently of pine, lias been found in Tauranga Bay, south of Cape Foul wind. The hateh — which is covered with barnacles — has the letters, '"L.D.V." well cut into it. On one, corner there is the letter "X" and on another corner appears the letter "S." I Messrs. Harcourt and Co. announce that they have issued their monthly Register and Property Investors' Guide, containing share report, farms, -city and suburban properties for s.ale, city and suburban houses to let, etc. The Register and Property Investors' Guide will be forwarded free to any address on application.
