FREE SCHOOL BOOKS. FOR CATHOLIC SCHOOLS.
The proposal of the Minister for Education to furnish public schools with free schoolbooks at the expense of the State has encouraged the Catholic community to hope that i/heir own schools will be similarly provided. Several Parliamentary candidates have already been asked if they are in favour of suc_ an extension of the principle of free echool-books, and some have replied in the affirmative. It is contended that Catholic schools should come under the scope of this concession, as they aro practically free. No charge is made for tuition, and the authorities have to rely on voluntary contributions for the support of their schools. It is understood that application will be made to the Minister for Education.
