NEWS AND NOTES. The five colts engaged in the Wanganui Guineas, to bo run to-morrow, all showed winning form last season. .Dia bolo, who scored his only win as a two-year-old in the North Island Challenge Stakes, will have the nssistance of 0. Jenkins in the saddle to-morrow. With the exception of Mr. G. P. DomiellyJ the owners of the horses engaged this year have all won the race in previous seasons. The Benzoin pony Lady ,Zion, a successful competitor at Miramar at Easter time, was receutly sent into the .sale ring at Sydney, and changed hands at 68 guineas, subject to Wio owner's approval. The Avondale handieapper was evidently under the impression that Nanmai was unlucky to lose the Henderson Handicap. The winner, of that event, Foremost, met Naumai' on better terms in the Mount Albert Handicap, five furlongs, run this afternoon. Veronica (Soulfc — Pretoria), who recently changed hands at Auckland for 700 guineas, has gone into A. Foley's Randwick stable. She is a full-sister to Herculean, a competitor at the Wellington Pony and Galloway meetings. Mr. Alfred Banks, who died at Palmerston North a few days ago, had some horses in training when he resided in the city. Pytchley, Hatley, and others carried his colours. For some time prior to his decease Mr. Banks had been a suffe/rer from diabetes. The Sydney Eeferee reports that the New Zealand filly Artillerie is very speedy, and should win a race ere returning home. She made her first appearance in Australia at Tattersall's meeting on 13th September. She was one of a large field that contested the Rawson Stakes, nine furlongs, and finished fifth. Mooltan, 9.4, went out favourite, but was beaten three-quarters of a length by the three-year-old colt Perkeo (Malster — Gavotte), who carried 7.2, and ran the distance in the record time of lmin 52isec. Perkeo is engaged in the A.J.C. Derby, also the Metropolitan Handicap with the light impost of 6.11. Artillerie ,, is engaged in tho Trial Stakes, one mile and a quarter ; Epsom Handicap,, The Shorts, six furlongs ; and Members Handicap, nine furlongs. Koyal Artillery could well do with a good advertisement to give him a lift m New South Wales. Pearlie", a fair fourth-rater, was about the best he sired here. In the Putiki Hack Handicap, one mile, at Wanganui to-morrow, Lamsdorf meets Mallet on 51b worse terms than when the pair named ran first and i second in the Balgownie Hack Handicap, one mile and a distance, at Wanganui in Maj-. Melodrama, top-weight in the Caulfield Cup, puc up a smart performance at Sydney Tattersall's meeting on the 12th inst. He carried 9.6, and beat a good field in the Tramway Handicap, six furlongs, in lmin 15£ sec. Ruby (Mannlicher — Jess), full-sister j to Mann jess, is doing satisfactory work in the Wairarapa. The sum of £180 will be distributed in stakes at the next meeting of the Wellington Pony and . Galloway Club to be held on 17th October. Paparaehi, winner of a double at Bulls, is top weight in tho Gonville Hack Hurdles at Wanganui to-morrow. The heavy going at Bulls did nob appear to suit Gleam. Canticle (Seaton. Delaval — Cantatrice) was awarded a race at Mentone on the 12th instant through the winner (Jolly Kate) being disqualified for interference. Kitty Meer (by Meer (imp.) — Bridesmaid) is one of the best performers in the Sydney pony ranks at the present time. At Kensington on the 9th instant she carried 10.0 and ran five and a half furlongs in lmin lO^sec. Lady Zion was unlucky to bump up against Kitty Meer at Rosebery last month, when the latter put up record time for fl£ furlongs. Lady Lucy, ' winner of the Maiden i Plate at Marton, is nicely placed in the Putiki Hack Handicap at Wanganui with! 7.10. The race won by the Soult gelding Sonnelline at Eosthill on Saturday iast, tho Camellia Stages, was run over 6ix furlongs. The Aucklander carried 9.5, and was on the same mark as Sea King. Sonnelline hag 7.12 in the Epsom Handicap. Golden Slipper was in the Spring Stakes, one mile, with 8.0, and Cross Battery in the Rosehill Handicap, one mile and a quarter, with 8.8. The field which contested th* Flying Handicap at Wanganui last year included the winners of the New Zealand Cup (Frisco) and Stewards' Handicap (Golden Crest). The bookmakers have obtained the advice of one of the loading lawyers in the Dominion concerning their position in reference to doing business at the j meetings of the Wellington Pony and ! Galloway Club. In the event of any club refusing to grant a license to a bookmaker that bets at Miramar a test case will follow. The Lark, winner of tne Spring Handicap at Wanganui last year with 8.4, is engaged in to-morrow's race with 9.0. Splendid Idea, who appears to have lost all form, made her last public appearance in the Telegraph Handicap at Bulls on Thursday. She goes to the stud this season, and is on Kilcheran'a list. The Stake was also submitted .it auction 1 * on the> second day ef the Ran^itikei meeting, and sold for 35 guineas. It is stated that the new owner intends to race The Officer gelding at the unregistered meetings. Nominations for the Otaki Race Meeting closo on Friday night. Massena is still confined to his bed as a result of the accident that happened to the Foxton sportsman when driving across to the Horowhenua meeting. He fractured one of his ribs ami received a severe shaking. Mr. George Payne leaves for Sydney on Friday by tho Mooraki with four horses. Sedition, winner of the Maiden Plate, and Master Soult, runner-up in tho Flying Handicap, at Avondale, on Saturday, are both engaged in the Guineas, to be run at Avondalo today. Master Soult is raced by the trustees of the lato Mrs. A. M. Coombe. Master Soult is not in the ITawkos Bay Guineas, but is in tho Great Northern. The Southern contingent in the Ellerslie race consists of Diabolo, Hereward, Ukraine, Aborigine, Wimmera, Miscast. and Chanteuso. On the recommendation of the appeal committee, the Canterbury Jockey Club's general committee tovday dismissed the appeal of J. Green against the disqualification of himself and mare Pretty Nell for twelve months by the Amberley Steeplechase -Club. At the same time the metropolitan body increased the disqualification of D. J. Price, jockey, from three months to twelve months WELLINGTON PONY AND GALLOWAY MEETING.
