HUTT GAS SUPPLY.

,AN AMENDED OFFER BY PETONE* REPORTED SUBSTANTIAL REDUCTION. The course *of negotiations in connec- ; tion with the supply of gas to the Lower Hutt has been followed with keen interest not only in the suburbs directly concerned, but also by many in the city, as ; the issue at stake, as already pointed out in The Post, is far greater than one of a few pence per thousand cubic feet of gas at the present time. The latest ■ phase of the question is a decision of : the Pet one Borough Council come to . last night, after consideration of a let■ter from the Hutt Council. The latter body had decided to go in for its own works, but as the result of strong re-, presentations by leading ratepayers- j against such a step — especially in view of the amalgamation of the boroughs, which many contend is only a question of time — the council wrote to Petone, . asking it, in effect, for its lowest offer. It is understood that the Petone Council last night decided to offer to supply gas to Hutt at 4s 3d per 1000 for the first three years, and at 4s for the remaining four years of a seven years' agreement. If this is correct, the pro- ; posed terms represent a substantial reduction. The Hutt Borough Council will meet to-morrow night to give - fur- < ther consideration to the matter. ]
