A PAYMENT AND A PROMISE.
(Received July 1, 9 a.m.) LONDON, 30th June. The evidence showed that Sievier received five thousand pounds, through Mills, a betting commissioner, who was negotiator between Joel and Sievier. The latter then gave Mills a letter promising not to molest Joel again. Mills surrendered the letter to the police when Joel laid the information. Some idea of the feeling existing between Sievier and Joel may be gained from the following extracts from Sievier's famous open letter to the financier. It opens": — "Dean Swift translated "Eques haud male notus" as "Better known than trusted," and concluded : ' 'You have been elected a member of the principal racing clubs in England, you are a member of the Jockey Club at Newmarket, you hare the entreo to tho Royal enclosure at Ascot — but you do not set foot in South Africa!" Tha last quotation has reference to certain dealings in diamonds.
