JOEL AND SIEVIER.
POLICE COURT PROCEEDINGS. EVIDENCE FOR THE PROSECUTION. By Telegraph.— Press Association.— Copyright. LONDON, 30th June. The hearing was commenced at the Bow-street Police Court yesterday of the charge against Robert S. Sievier of making threats to publish defamatory matter concerning J. B. Joel, the finan-. cier and sporting man, for the purpose of extorting money. According to the evidence for the prosecution, it appears that since the newspaper Winning Post was started Sievier had made almost weekly attacks upon Mr. J. B. Joel and his family. Recently Sievier, being short of money, approached Mr. Joel for a loan, finally promising to abstain from publishing any further alleged defamatory matter if given £5000. Mr. Joel offered £2500, on condition that Sievier gave a written promise. The latter refused, and demanded another £5000, under a threat that he would publish' some incidents in Joel's life. Accused was remanded, bail being refused.
