YACHTS IN WAR TIME
A STATEMENT DENIED. "INTERESTING SUGGESTION." MR, DEAKIN WANTS TO HEAR SOMETHING DEFINITE. Bf Telegraph.— 'Press Aesoolatlon.— Copyright. (Received May 25, 10.30 a..m) MELBOURNE, This Day. Mr. Deakin, Federal Prime Minister, denies the statement that he intends to ask Parliament to grant £2000 to assist the establishment of a yacht race between yachts of specified build and equipment, which could be at the disposal of the Commonwealth or New Zealand either as torpedo boats or scouts. Mr. Deakin says the suggestion is interesting, but he wants a more definite scheme. The matter was brought before Mr. Deakin by Captain Whitney, acting on behalf of Auckland yachtsmen. Captain Whitney says Sir Joseph Ward promised favourable consideration to a request for £500. ~
In Australian naval circles, we are told, the proposal to subsidise sea-going yachts for coastal defence purposes is generally regarded as having- more humour than utility.
