WELLINGTON CHESS CLUB. OPENING OF SEASON.
The Wellington Chess Club opened its season on Saturday evening with a sides match, in which twenty-two players took port. In the regretted absence, through indisposition, of tho club's newly-elected president, Mr. E. W. Petherick, sides were chosen by Messrs. Litfclojohn and fuelling, vice-presidents. The former's team, after a hard struggle, emerged victorious by 6g wins to 4£. The scores were as follows : — Barnes ... 0 v. W. E. Mason 1 Littlejohn ... 1 v. F. K. Kelling 0 Still 4 v. Severne ... % Stewart ... 0 v. A. F. Fell ... 1 Gyles, jun. . 1 v. F. B. Sharp... 0 Gyles sen. ... 1 v. R. Kelling ... 0 Arden ... 0 v. Fouhy ... 1 Morris ... 1 v. Ashby ... 0 Nops 1 v. Hurley ... 0 Land ... 0 v. Weine ... J Stanford ... 1 v, Scott 0 Ik 4* Sixteen players have up to the present signified their intention of competing in the club's annual handicap tourney for tbe Pethorick Shield and other prizes. As the entries do not close till to-morrow evening, the entry list will in all probability be up to the standard of past years in this popular competition — deservedly popular because of the liberal odds given to the younger players, who have won the shield oftoner than the class I. players. ' The photo of tho late Mr. C. W. Benbow, who was president of the club for nearly thirty years, viz., from the resignation of the Hon John Ballance in 1879, until his death in March last, was on view in the clubroom on Saturday for the first t'me. Tho picture, which was presented by the mem bers of the deceased gentleman's family, is an excellent likeness, and is greatly treasured by the members of the club.
