xno managers of the P«tone Tech1. nical School met last evening, when there were . present Eev. A. Thomson (in the chair), and Messrs. Nicholson, ■ Gastle, Duncan, Baldwin, and Mothes. Officers for the ensuing term were elected as follows: — Chairman, Eev. A. Thomson (re-elected) : treasurer, Mr. Duncan (re-e]ect€d) ; hon. secretary, Mr. J. ti. Castle (re-elected) ; assistant secretary, Mr. J. Mason. ' The' instructors to the various classes ,wero reappointed. Mr. Clifford, teacher of shorthand aud^ typewriting, resigned and Mr. Gerrard 'in the meantime "is to continue the class. Applications for the position of instructor will, however, - been advertised for. Mr. M'Kenzie's election as representative of the- Seddon Memorial Fund Subscribers was reported, and the Working Men's Club notified that Mr. E. •* Wylie would represent it for the ensuing year. The Education Department notified that £3419 had been granted by Cabinet for the erection of the new Tech- ' * jiical School. ' Mr. F. J. de Clere, architect, who was in attendance at the ■ meeting, was instructed to get the con'.r "tract' signed fo* the new building. A , .^fubcommittee, consisting of Messrs. -'-Duncan, Thomson, Castle, and Nichol....aon, was set ap to confer with the architect, and hasten on the commencement of the building. A communication was received from * the trustees of the Boys' Brigade So- " 'ciebv agreeing to hand over the section of land in Beach-street belonging to the society, provided it had representa- *-- lion of the board to- the extent of one *■> membeiv It recommended that the land be not sold unless for the equipment of the new school. The section '•" is valued at £100. In the event of it ' ' being sold the- society would still continue to have representation. It was decided to instruct Mr. Mothes to effect .1." the necessary transfers. THE NEW WHARF. * ... A STAET MADE. A start has at last been made with the actual 'construction of the Petono Wharf. The pile-driving gear was towed across the harbour this morning to tho Petone beach, and the contractors ox- • pected to make a start this afternoon. For once there was no ceremony, no speeches, and no popping of corks. The first piles, to be driven a few feet above the high-water mark, are about 20ft -in length. The work of driving these is somewhat tedious, owing to the work entailed in transferring the gear, - when sinking piles on dry land. As soon as the necessary timber arrives, work of a more important character will be proceeded with. W.C.T.U. The monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U., Lower Hutt, was held on Tuesday, presided over by the president, Mrs. Strand (senior), who was assisted by Mrs. Garlick, the retiring president. The report for ,1907, which showed the work to be fairly satisfactory and a good balance in hand, was adopted. The election of pincers resulted as follows : Mrs. Strand (sen.), president; Mrs. Routley, trea- - surer ; -Mrs. Strand (junior), secretary ; ... Mr?. Ledbrook (W.R. Agent). A pleasant feature of- the gathering was a wel- '. come to Mrs. K.£ay, of Alicetown, as a member of the union. In other parts - she is well known as an ardent worker in this cause. Plans are in hand for „* more strenuous efforts in tho temperance campaign. Several visitors from other parts took parts in tho proceedings. ===== Mr. H. G. Ell, M.P., has boon advised by tho Piemier that a belt of bush along the main Kaikoura, coach road is to be- acquired for scenery preservation pin poses. Messrs. A. T. Viewers and Co. will dell by auction nt Taihtpe on Thursday sth March, thirty-five section's adjoining the tow n-ship of Ohakunc ; also a homestead of 169 acres. The auctioneers call attention to the fact i.hot the near completion of the Main Trunk Railway will enhance the value of this property. Messrs .Macdonald, Wilson, and Co., in conjunction with Messrs. Dalgety and Co., will under instructions from the liquidator of Lyons, Ltd., sell at the stables, Abel Smitl.-blieet, on Thursday, sth March the whole of the plant of three iivery 'stables.
