HISTORIC MAORI RELICS LOST.
[By Telsghafh.— Special to The Post.] I AUCKLAND, This Day. During recent bush fires, the old native meeting house at Maungakawa, j in tho Waikato, was destroyed. It contained a number of valuable carvings, in eluding the "Throne" and the "Crown" of the late King Tawhiao. Both were beautifully carved, the latter being inlaid with greenstone. .The Maoris had .refused £800 fpr the contents recently. Tho Hon. Jas. Carroll endeavoured to have them placed in the Museum, but the Suspicious nature of the Maoris prevented them handing the treasures over to the pakeha for- safe keeping. They are about to take proceedings against a settler who, it is ajleged, started a fire to clear bush.
