"MYSTERY OF TWO CONTINENTS."
NEW ZEALAND WOMAN &lUB- l - DERED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) LONDON, 3rd January. - Much interest on both sides of the Atlantic has been excited in Ihe tragedy of a beautiful woman in red, whosa body was found yesterdays in a swamp at Harrison, New Jersey. A man named Albert Thompson is under arrest charged with the murder", but the dead woman is not his wife, as was ,conjectured, for she has boea traced to Sheffield. When she left England with 'her husband they went to New Zealand, and in a letter the hus> bapd explains why he took har thereJ They had four children with them, but husband and wife parted again, ana the former went to America. The eldest son js still in New Zealand, as well as two daughters. The mother returned with the youngest son, who is now only 16 years old, and has reached Sheffield, where it is stated sho is living. The following letter was written by; Albert Thompson to his brother Stephen, who resides near Chesterfield, and dated 20th November, 1907. It is addressed' from aboard the power-boat Idle Hour, Newark, New Jersey, and reads :— "Thi» is Thanksgiving Day here. I have heard that everybody is supposed to be thankful for something. I hays been wondering what I have to b» thankful for now. Some things hava gone very bitter with me, and some things sweet. I have tried hard for a better life, and sometimes have had to consider myself a failure, but to-day I am thankful for a lot of things. Ths best is, I have my full health and more strength than I had one or two years ago; secondly, I don't drink any beer, wine, or spirits; and, thirdly, I have not been in the company of a woman, since- I left New Zealand. These are the three things I am most thankful for. I am thankful to say I am living in my own home, which is a boat 40ft long, 15ft wide, and propelled by an engine 12 horse-power, but I have not got this thing for a home and pleasure alone, for in the summer 1 can make a clear profit of £3 a day. ... If - I had been the scamp some people make me outj to be, I should have stayed down ; but you can't keep a good man down, and these, things prove I am not the villain they claim me to be. Tell me if Mrs. Richardson is getting better or not. Wishing you a MerryChristmas." Up to the- time- of the mail closing nothing fresh has been heard. Nothing that the 'presont Chamber of Deputies of France has done has made a greater impression on tho public mind than raising the honorarium paid to the deputies to £600 a year. This is ttngibie, visible evidence of tho way deputies to Fooa forget election promises, and roo life at the expense of their constituents in "Satanic Paris." One "new member, Ai. Avchimbaud, owed his election to denunciation of the incrciibe — perfectly eafo denunciation because ho is novel 1 likely to get a majority of the deputies to follow him. Archiinbaud \>as promptly impeached for false representations id his campaign speeches, and may nol be allowed to take his seat.
