• INVERCARGILL This Day. Yesterday the last wool sale of the season .Was a very flaccid thing, and farmers who had como to town hoping for the best now wander about disconsolately and talk about, hard times. There wcio only about half the usual number cf b,uyera at tho sale,' and they only played with tho wool. Had it noc been for the local contingent of purchasers matters would have been mucti wor?o. lit ihe oataloguo of 4213 bales there was "little now wool, most of that offered being tho residue from tho previous sale. Li very few cases the wool sold as well a? at tho former auction, but in tho majority of cases there was a marked decline in prices — far mere co than was expeered or could be accounted for by London advices. In some cases wool passed in at last rale showed a decline ,of 2id. Other samples varied at id IcES upwards. There were only two or three lots of merino sold. Pieces were considerably back, though competition was better than for fleeces. ' [press association.] CHICKENPOX IX AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, 11th February. An epidemic of chickennox is prevalent in Auckland just now. In some cases the attack is severe, and adults have Buffered from the complaint, which usually claims children as its victims. MINES SHQRT OF WATEK. AUCKLAND, 11th February. Owing to the shortage of water, miniug operations inland are being sadly interfered with. In some oases batteries have had to cease operations, and a large number of miners have had to bo discharged. THE AMOKUHA. AUCKLAND, llfh February. The Government training ship Amokura arrived to-day. This is the vessel's first visit to Auckland since her conversion to her present class. She is on a cruise round tho northern coast, and will make Auckland her headquarters for the present. COMMITTED FOX TRIAL. DUNEDiy, 11th February. At the Police Court to-day, William / Booth, a young man, was charged with having, on 31st January, stolen £6 aud an umbrella valued at 5s from Henry Hill, and also with having assaulted Hill The ovidenco of the complainant, who is a veterinary surgeon, was to the effect that* no and aecuted had four drinks together and that while going along the street afterwards accused asked him for money, witness refusing. Complainant alleged that the accused then assaulted and robbed him. Accused reserved his defence, and was committed for trial.
