Father Ainsworth, for five and a half years parish prkst in South Wellington, who is being transferred to the pastorate oi' Hokitika, preached his farowell ssnnon. During ths course of a veiy interesting and feeling address, the preacher said that when Newtown was, less than six years ago, constituted a parith the congregation was small, services had to be held ir_ a little room, and the grounds were a bog. During the period of his rectorship several thousands of pounds had been expended in the direction ot' supplying' church and school accommodation and providing a presbytery. He expressed his indebtedness to the Rev. Father Herbert, who had ever been a faithful assistant and a good friend, and to the sisters who had so well attended to th,c education of the children. In bidding farewell to a congregation for which, he said, he felt much love, Father Ainov ovth ennumerated tho Sacramental gifts which had been given to the church, ond exhorted his heaiers to be always loyal, and to sliotv that they were, practical Catholics >by making full use o»" those gifts. Later, Father Herbert announced that it was intended to present Father Ainsworth with a tsstimonial and some tangible mark of appreciation. The departing pastor, said Father Herbert, was a useful citizen, a worthy priest, and an ornament to the Society of Mary, of which he is a member. Father Ainsworth leaves for his new charge in a few days' time.
