CRICKET. SATURDAY'S MATCHES.

SOME INTERESTING GAMES. Excellent cricketing weather prevailed on Saturday, and the largo number of spectators who assembled at the Basin Reserve were treatrd to a display of really iatcresting cricket. Midland continued its gam? against Wellington, and Prtone against Old Boys. Tho game*, which vpie the semi-finals of ths s:mor i-haapionship, had been begun a foitnight previously. Or thcit occjsion Wellington scored lE4 and Midland had lost two wickets for 52, Wighton (4) and Wynyard (38) being the not out. men; Wynyard got to work as socn as play started, and, playing good cricket, ran his score up to 05, whfn he was beaten by a beautiful swerving ball from Nash, who' at that pjriod of tho game was bowling capitally. Throughout his innings ho hit freely, and his score included a ten, uhich he hit off Fisher. It was a beautiful drive, right, Into the south corner near the church, and seven were run straight put, three moio being added for a culpable overthrow. Bcorinc went on slowly for a whilo after that, until Patrick and Upharo joined forces, and then the pijee became faster. Patrick, particularly, hit wilh splendid freedom and confidence, and kept tho irldsraen busy. His placing, too, was excellent, and as Uphnrn was also in j^ood scoring form, tho display was attractive and interesting. Patrick, however,'had a bit of luck. Before he had Rofc >into doublo figures' he was jr.issed by Hales, and \vh?n his score was 80 Vare missed an easy catch from , him. In feet, the two batsmen had bowlers and fieldsmen fairly '"rattled," and the fielding v.ai of the poorest quality.. /At 5.3Q the score- board showed 300, of which Upkam and Patrick had contributed 124, Ujpham's sharo.beIng ?0. The latter, however, kept on scoring, though not so ffrec<ly as Patrick, .and after being mis&cd by Fisher when his | iota' was 58 was caught and bowled j by Quiun before he had aclueu to his j store. The partnership had resulted in a total of 159, of which Fatrici; ' had made 23. Mitchell filled tha vacancy, and made sr^en, while Patrick j added fourteen to his, total. When *he j had scored a century (a result greeted with loud applause) he was shockingly missed by Qiunn. I"he ball ran up his bat straight into the air. Quinn' stood under,- caught the ball,' and dropped it. It V vas the worst, "mull" of an afternoon fruitful of "mulls," and the crowd greeted it accordingly. Shortly afterwards IVFilchelJ was ,nuj out, and Patrick was lotully .applauded for what was really :i splendid innings, which included an 8 (six run straight out and two for an overthrow), a 6, and a 5. The innings concluded-Tr^tty a store o£ 353, piling Midland 'a. . lead of 199 on the fli'st innings. ".*,■' In tho Old Boys-Prton- game," Old Boys made 273 on the first innings, and Petone had lost three wickets for 68, L. Isherwood (36)' and Senior (10) being tho not out men. There was nothing remarkable about the conclusion of the innings, which lesulted in a score of 138. Old Boys again did .veil in their second attempt. The chief feature was a fine stand 'made by B»e-hsy and Tucksr. Beecbsy was in particularly good forni, and, mastering the bowling, hit out frcsly all round the wickcjets, and ran up the excellent score of 75, which indgaed.three, fives'," three fours,' and sev'^iP'thr£fiS. Lomax also played a good "n'.jnngs for 30, vhich included two fours and five threes. J. P. Blackiock's score of 26 was made in eight hjts, l. fi&lttding one. of seven, and MonSghau's 13 included onefive. • In fact, hard ihitting was the order of ths day, and fielders had a, pretty hard time. ;' The exciting featuro-jof the Gas Company v. Newtown mattli, \vhich, however, did not count fpr the championship, was tho remarkable stand made by Hodge and Spottiswoode. Both players were in the vein for'hard hitting, and they made- things \lively. Hodge made "a century, and . Spottiswoode topped lus scors} by four. "Extras" were four during their .stand, which, therefore, made tlicir partnership total 203, On the previous Saturday Gas Company had made 352 for right wicknts, of which Hodge had contributed 74 and Spottiswooda 79. Newtown responded with a score of 156, cf which Payne made 63 by retilly £ood, lively cricket.
