TRAMWAY EMPLOYEES.
o CHARGE OF MALINGERING. ''In spite of tho heavy traffic during the recent holiday ponod (wrote Mr. Stuart Richardson, City Electrical Engineer, in his report submitted last night to the City Council Tramways Committee) no serious accidents occurred, and only a few minor ones. This, I think, reflects great credit on the motormen and ' conductors, as, during Christmas time the streets wero thronged with people, making it necessary for niotormen and conductor? to use tho greatest of caro in the performance of their dufciea. I l'egret, however, to have to point out that a considerable number of men did not turn up to their duty on Boxing Day, and this had 4o_ be overcome by working the men *>io did turn up a considerable number oi~ tiours of overtime, making tho cost to the corporation much higher, on account of this overtime pay. I think it would bo advisable to consider whether, .the men , who do not turn up to their work ttf 'Christinas tinie should "be entitled to receive ' pay for Christmas Day. If the man are really ill, that should be a sufficient excuse ; but these, or a number of them, 'stayed away practically to suit their own convenience."
