DUNEDIN NOTES. WORK FOR THE ARBITRATION COURT.

LIVE STOCK MARKET DEAD. AN APPEAL. [Bt Tklegbaph. — Special to The Post.] DUNEDIN, This Day. Only eighfc disputes have been tiled for hearing at the coming sittings of the Arbitration Court, which promises to be the shortest yet held here. Tho Labour Department has some twentyfour applications for enforcement of awards, which is the smallest number brought before the court to date. Burk, three-mile champion of Austra* lasia, and Trembath (winner of the 100 yards, 440 yards, and half-mile events at last Saturday's sports), will meet over half a mile at the Dunedin club's sports on tho Caledonian Ground on the 15th inst. The meeting will be looked forward to with the greatest interest in athletic circles. ; Tho local stock market is absolutely at a standstill on account of the dry weather, resulting, of course, in a scarcity of food. Six weeks ago Southland dealers were- buying freely as the outlook was promising, but since adverse advices havo been received from the North the bottom is out of the market. The freezing works, however, open tomorrow, and will no doubt take away the fat stock, which will help the feed, and will give the market an opportunity of righting itself. To the Otago Caledonian Society is due the credit of establishing technical classes for the youth of Dunedin, which were in reality the precursors of technical education in this city. Now that tho Government has taken charge of technical education the Caledonian society thinks of devoting itself and its reserve fund to work of a philanthropic character. J. Scott, at one time walking cham pion of the world, is in a serious condition owing to cancer in the throat, and an appeal to tho sporting public is being mado on his behalf.
