LOWEK HUTT. The orchnarj meeting of the Lower Hutt Borough Council was held last evening. °resent: The .Mayor (Mr. "T A. Peterkin), Councillors Baldwin, Ross, Ilollard, Judd, Wildf.inith, Hodgins, O'Sullivan, Ward, and Russell. Mr W. E. Saunders wroto enquiring if the water supply would be laid on to Pilmuir-streei, off Orr's-lane. It was contended that it would be far better to carry out the present reticulation scheme befoie tpking on further work. On the motion of Councillor Ward the applicant was granted permission to lay the pipes at his own cost A complaint about street names was read trom Mr. 2. JTrevelhick. The matter was held over, as the council had decided to, in the near future, hold a special meeting to oeal with the question as affecting the whole boiough. An application was received from tho employees of Messrs M'livride and Son, for permission to play a return cricket j match on the Recreation Ground on Saturday, Ist February The npplica tion was referred to the recreation committee- with power to it Tha attentin of the council was drawn by Mr. E. D. Judd to the way Mr. Powell had been conveying boulders from his quarry on to the council's road The nnttei* wns stated to havo been ' dealt with by the engineer. Mr J. Crowthei drew the attention of the council to the unsafe condition of the Wainui Hill-road to ordinary vehicular traffic, consequent upon lh& iise of motor cars. The writer suggested the completion of the fencing of the roadside. The engineer was instructed to furnish a report concerning the advisability of fencing the more dangerous sections of the road. Five ratepayers and residents in. Queens-road applied for an extension of the present drain, to enable them to connect their properties therewith. The engineer was requested to report on this matter to the next meeting of the council. \. communication was received from the borough solicitor, in regard to the widening of Parliament and Bridge streets. In the former street the documents, it was stated, had been handed to the chief clerk, Roads Department, for issue of proclamation, in the latter case the documents were forwarded for completion by the council. Tho necessary signatures were attached. 'ENGINEER'S REPORT. The engineer reported to the council as follows: —The work in connection with th» waterworks pipe-laying had new been completed as far as Orr's-lane, on the Main-road. All connections had been msde with side stieets as the work j.roceeded. The engines a.nd pumps of the engine-house had been tested, and had given satisfaction. The connections with the reservoir wtre Doing made. Qood progress nad been nxide in the work of tarring the footpaths. The gas main on the Waiwetu-road had been com ploted, and the various connections made. The ei2clion of a public pound was bemg curried on. The engineer also stated that Mr .Powell's attention must be drawn lo ho fact that his trollies occasionally break away, causing large stones to be pr.jarVi on to the read, and bounding fiom thme into the gully below, cncTau-goruitj-the road and breaking the tencos, and at tho same time making tho load exceedingly dangerous to trade. In convection with the sanitary work three connections had been madp duiing the past fortnight. Notices had bean served cm three bviilders requesting thtm to CD \jp- depressions under resiliences now in course of e-rectioa. Accounts amounting to £454 7s lid ware passed for payment. THE HALF-HOLIDAY. r Lho Mayor reported that be lnd visited the sl:opkn?p?rs in the borough in iegard to the half-holiday question. They W€iv, he said, unanimoiifly in favour of Wednesday, but if the Wellington people decided on Saturday thby preferred to fall in with that day The matter was hsld over until the city shopkeepers had come to a decision.
