Mrs. Seddon will also give a, carved oak memorial pulpit to St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral. It will be noticed from our London commercial cahle message this morning that the Bank of England rate of discount was raised at this week's meeting of the directors to 5^ -per cent. It was erroneously cabled yesterday as 44 per cent. Some of the medals awarded by ths Christchurch International Exhibition have recently been received in Auckland, and, says tho Herald, speak well for the economy exercised in the matter by the executive or Government, whichever lg responsible. The medals, j which can heardly be regarded as "things of beauty," -are exactly the size of a two shilling piece. Howeverj they aro "official awards,'' and, ugly or not, will, we suppose, be appreciated by tho recipients. Dr. Purdy, District Health Officer, at Auckland, has been rounding up tho various local bodies to put their houses in order. A correspondent in the Herald now suggests that tho energetic officer, as well as thoso of other "districts, might, with advantage, give some consideration to the t drinking utensils in hotel bars, as well as to the larger questions of drainage, and disposal of refuse. At present, he says, tho system of cleansing is a very crude one. "A steaming plant is not expensive, and would be a great help in keeping the glasses in a sanitary condition."
