IN THE BALKANS.

DESPERATE FIGHTING REPORTED. RECRUDESCENCE OF CRIME. By Telegr»ph.- -Press Association.— Copyrigiit. ATHENS, 31st July. Desperate fighting is reported to have taken plac« in tho Seres district, Macedonia. Troops of Bashi Bazouks destroyed two GTeek bands. Many casualties are reported. A semi-official statement published at Athens complains of a recrudescence of crimes against Greek residents in Macedonia.

It has been asserted, probably with some truth, that Greek bands have, with the connivance of the Government, been equipped with the object of exterminating Bulgars, in order that Monastrr, Seres, and Kavalla districts may be included in tho Greek national sphere. These bands arc said to be officered by Greek army officers, their expenses being paid by -wealthy Greeks. The Turkish Government has made an energetic protest against the Greeks' action.
