The Engineer-in-Chief (Mr. R. W. Holmes) will inspect the North Island Main Trunk Railway works next week. Colonel Davies, Inspector-General of the Forces, has returned from Taranaki, and will leave for Canterbury on Monday. Dr. Lyman Sperry passed through Wellington last evening on his way to Christchurch. -It has been found impossible to arrange a lecture by the visitor in Wellington. Mr. J. Stewart Kelly, who has been editor of the Grey River Argus for the past two years, is relinquishing that position to rejoin the literary staff of tho Press, Ghristchurch. Mr. Hargood, of tho Wellington Crown Lands Office, is suffering from severe j injuries sustained tnrough tripping on a projection on the Btrcet. He will be | unama to resume duty for some weeks. At St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral yesterday afternoon Miss M. E. Tavendale, third daughter sof Mrs. Tavendale of this city, was married to Mr. J. W. Scott. The bride was attended by Miss J. Tavendale, and was given away by Mr. O. Josephson. Mr. I. Davey was the best man, and the Rev. T. Sprott the officiating clergyman. Mr. H. J. Bathgate, who has been on the headquarters staff of the Education Department for a considerable time, left for Christchurch last night to take up the duties of deputy-manager of the Burnham Home. Mr. Bathgate has made a study of industrial school systems, and his knowledge should now prove of practical use for the work. On severing his connection with the firm of Messrs. Sargood, Son and Ewen, to enter into business in Fcilding on his ov/n account, Mr. 'A. G. Walker was presented b,v tha omployeea with a collection of silverware, and by the firm with a solid marble clock. Air. Tewsley, general manager, made the presentation, and his remarks concerning the guest's personal popularity and success m business were endorsed by Messrs. Austin and Witt. Amongst those who attended the funeral of Mrs. John Smith, wife of City Councillor Smith, yesterday afternoon : wore the Town Clerk (Mr. J. R. Palmer) representing the Mayor, who was unable to be present, and Councillors Luke, fthirteline, Cohen, Hindmarsh, Ballinger, Fletcher, Godber, Hales, and Murdoch, and representatives of the Grand Lodge of Oddfellows, IVlanchester Unity. The interment was made in tho Sydneyutrest cemetery, the Rev. J. K. Elliott officiating at tho graveside. The Rev. W. Douglas, M.A., who for upwards of twenty years has been in charge of the Hokitika pastorate of tho Presbyterian Church, will during the current week undertake the work of ministering to the spiritual needs of mombers of the church in Boseneath, t Eilbirnic, Miramar, and adjoining districts under the Presbytery of Wellington. Before leaving* Hokitika Mr. Dougla3 was presented with a purse of sovereigns as a token of^ esteem from his congregation.
