Rather surprisingly, the nhortcomings of some of the postal pillar-boxes in tho city havo escaped the eyes of " Pro Bono Publico " and other vigilant persons who, aro constantly on the look-out for " copy/ The lips of the receivers are altogether too closes together to admit v very large meal- of newspaper. Such a dainty mouth havo somp cf the pillars that they look as' if they were designed to devour only dainty little billets-doux, and set their teeth firmly against bulky fare, which the offerer, however, may not consider to bo inordinarily massive. These boxes " strike " even against a newspaper of moderate size, and if a person docs manage to squeeze v one through the hostile jaws he is consumed with anxiety lest the stump has been dragged off or torn to tatters. Often a package", whose dimensions are not at all formidable, has to bo at much inconvenienco taken to the General Post Office. It is felt that the orifices of the pillars could be easily designed to suit public needs without sacrificing the safety of the contents. A resident of WolUngton-terrace, near the junction with Boulcott-street, complains that ihe bos at thq crossways is much' congested before the final hour arrives for clearing on Sunday nights. Twice, ho says, he has brought letters there between 11 and 12, and each time he had difficulty in finding room for his epistles. The box was gorged to the' lips,, and some of the food was almost trickling out. He declares that any one could have easily abstracted letters. To-night a new system of destination signals will bo tried on the Corporation curs" with discs of red, blue, white, and green, but not moro thun one colour will be. used in a single set. The lights will remain unaltered on ' the routes Whether the cars are going towards the station or away from it, and thus a nuisance will be removed: It is feared, however, that blue will not prove a .satisfactory indicator, and, it is believed that the signal system has not yet reached its iinal torm. Ihe following is the present arrangement :— lsland- Bay to ' Government Station, three blue discs ; Const :ible-stieet to Manawatu or Government Station, two blue;' Oriental Bay to Thorndon Esplanade, one blue; Ncwtown to Kaiori, three reds; Newtown to Tinakori-road, two red; Newtown to Government, Station, one red ; Wallace-street to Government Station, three green ; Aro-sUc^t to Government Sttilion, two greeu ; -Brooklyn to Mannersstreet, one green; Mirnmar to Government Station, two white ; Kilbirnie to Government ' Station, one white. There was a very large attendance in tho railway goods shed at Thorndon yesterday afternoon, when a sale of unclaimed luggage wns held. Swags, portmanteaus, travelling rugs, umbrellas, overcoats, spectacles, babies' bottles, bags, paicels, and other articles in profusion were offered. Swags sold at from 2s to 3s 6cl, portmanteaus at 2s 6d to 255, and babies' bottles were to bo had for taking away. Competition was very keen at times — duo no doubt in ' part to the element of chance in- . volvcd.
