A message from Mr. Ayson, Chief Inspoctor of Fisheries, states that tho salmon ova recently brought by him from California have been hatched out in very good condition at Hakataramea. Some disappointment has been suffered with tho white fish ova, placed at Kunieri. The long voyage over tho Pacific did not suit tho eggs, connequently they did not hatch out s»> well «s those of the two previous shipments, Tho Cisco herring experiment at Rolorun, was a failure. Some 60 per cent, of tbo eggs went bud in Uansit, and tho rost died as soon as they yjtxe hutched.
Wellington's share of the recent heayy rain was nearly three inches, spread principally over three days — Saturday 0.47 in, Sunday 0.69\n, Monday 1.67 in. The Meteorological Office reports that plenty more rain appears to be imminent. During the past twenty-four hours rain has visited most parts of the country, and it is predicted that showers may again be- general. A full regular tramway service is to be run in the city on Good Friday. The carp will be run by a volunteer force of motormen and conductors. The members of tho etaff of tho service were asked individually whether they would run on Good Friday, and only thirty replied that they would prefer not to work on that day. c The members of the Native Land Commission, his Honour the Chief Justice (Sir Robt. Stout) and Mr. A. T. Ngata, will leave for Wanganui tomorrow morning, and commence work there on Friday. Matters connected with about five blocks of land will be investigated. A fresh crew has been sent over to join the Wellington-owned schooner Emma Sims. Captain M'Donald has the vessel anchored about six miks from Havelpck. Meßsrs. W. F. Shortt, Ltd.; , advertise an extensive eale of furniture, aud also a portable forge, by auction at thoir rooms, Willis-street, to-morrow, at 2 o'clock. A number of interesting photographs of the accident to the pipe bridge at Petone are on view at Zak's photo depot, Willis-street. The photos are taken from different points of view, and give a good idea of the amount of water rnnnintr to waste.
