NEW SOUTH WALES POLITICS
\ •* . COALITION MOVEMENT. TOESS ASSOCIATION. (Received March 20, 9.15 a.m.) . SYDNEY, This Day. Negotiations are proceeding for a coalition between the Parliamentary Liberal Party and the party led by Mr. Waddell. ALLIANCES AGAINST LABOUR. The Sydney Morning Herald has for some time been girding at tho Government "Liberals" and Air. Waddell's " Progressives " to join forces against ! " tne common enemy" (Labour). The union of the Victorian Government with the Peacock or " third " party, and tho success of this combination at the present Victorian elections, has no doubt added force to the movement. Speaking on 28th February, Mr. Waddell is reported as expressing the hope that "an honourable compact would be made, as there was practically no difference between the politics of either party, and no sacrifice of principle would have (6 be made." Says the Herald : " Mr. Waddoll is a force in the country. He is respected as a thoroughly honest and straightforward Liberal ; and there 13 every reason why in the coming campaign he should be side by side with the Government. He often voted with Ministers during the present Parliament, and his presence on the Opposition benches was not a true indication of his sympathies and inclinations. We assume that Mr. Carruthers realises all this as clearly as the onlookers, who are supposed to see most of the game." It is noteworthy that a similar movement has been on foot in Queensland, but the Premier (Mr. Kidston) refused to coalesce with the Philp Party declaring that "he was still a Labour man, who did not content himself with talking about his loyalty to a platform, but who contrived to place plank after I plank of that platform on the statute l book.
