FIRE BRIGADES.
DEMONSTRATION AT CHRISTCHURCH. far nuoaAFH. — raiss a.ssociation-1 CHRISTCHURCH, 19th March. The biennial demonstration under the auspices of the New Zealand Fire Brigades' Association opened on the Exhibition sports ground this afternoon in anything but favourable weather. As a consequence, the attendance was practically limited to members of visiting brigades, of whom, however, there was a full muster. Three events were run simultaneously during the day, but only one of these, the tnree-man manual, was completed, in which Christchurch scored a fine win, beating Timaru by a second. The Corowa (Now South Wales) brigade was entered for a number of competitions, but as only two men of the solected team could make the journey these were compelled to confine their attentions to the hose-coupling contest, in which they shaped fairly . well, but failed to come up to the standard time, and 'were, therefore, disqualified. The most attractive event was the, hose, reel, flat and ladder competition, which made heavy demands upon the all-round ability of the men taking part. The work done was of .such an excellent character that in very few instances were penalties for defects imposed. Morff than half of the competitors in the two-men coupling event ran during the afternoon, and a start was also made with the one-man manual con--test. Kumara, Kaiapoi, Temuka, Gore and Eastown Railway were disqualified. In the manual engine (dry) competition, for one man, up to call of time, the following brigades had competed in the order named : — Gore 42 2-ssec , Carterton 45sec, Rangiora 45 l-ssec (4sec penalty), Spit 46 2-ssec (3sec), Woodville 46 3-sscc (3sec). Hose, Reel, Flat and Ladder, for five ■men. — The following teams in the order given had run by the close of the afternoon: — Palmerston North, 65 2-ssec, Wanganui, 60 2-ssec ; Na3eby, 65 2-ssec ; Petone, 86sec (including lsec penalty) ; Gisborne, 70sec; Fitzroy, 67 3-ssec, Greymouth, 60sec (2sec); Dunedin Railway, 69 2-ssec (lsec); Hastings, 5D 4-ssec; Timaru, 60sec; Parnell, 67sec; Whangarei, 65 2-ssec (lsec). Christchurch and Nelson were disqualified. The competitions will be resumed tomorrow.
