SCHOOL INSPECTORS' CONFERENCE.
YESTERDAY'S SESSION. The conferonce continued its sittings yesterday afternoon. A motion submitted by Mr. Mulgan (North Canterbury) — "That the junior National scholarships be open to all persons of either sex not over 13 years of age on the Ist day of the month in which the examination is held" — was also referred to the Secondary Education Committee. CORRESPONDENCE CLASSES. • Tho general committee was instructed to deal with a suggestion made by the'.Otago Education Board to the effect that correspondence classes should be established to enable teachers in isolated districts to proparo for tho requirements of the department's examinations for teachers' certificates. OTHER MATTERS. Several notices of motion relating to the- health of school children, and the inspection and examination of pupils, were roferred to special committees. Apropos of one of the suggestions made tho, chairman stated that Dr. Mason had communicated with him stating that Mr. Royd Garlick was prepared to givo illustrations of deep breathing Exercises which he (Dr. ■Mason) thought would be of benefit to pupils if introduced in the schools. The conforonce agreed to meet Mr. Garlick at 12.30 o'clock to-morrow. MEDICAL EXAMINATION 1 OP PUPILS. The question of having - school children medically examined was next dealt' with. A suggestion was made that Dr. Mason should be invited to address the conference on the subject, but as his views on the question have already appeared in print, a majority of members thought they would be making an undue tax on the Chief Health Officer. Dr. Anderson said the whole question was hedged round by the question of expense— how far the examination could be extended without unduly burdening the finances of the colony. After some further discussion the matter was referred to the general committee.
