CONFERENCE OF SCHOOL INSPECTORS.

I THE SCHOOLS OF THE COLONY. TO-DAY'S SITTING. The whole of yesterday afternoon's [■•sitting of tho conference of school in- [- spectors and training college principals of the colony was spent in committee .discussing the question of "admission to secondary schools under free place regulations." N The conference resumed at ten o'clock this morning, the Inspector-General (Mr. [ G. Hogben, M.A.,) presiding. Letters were received extending the privileges of the Parliamentary library and the Civil Service Club to members of the conference. The conference recorded its appreciation of these kindnesses. COMMITTEES. Committees were appointed as fol?lows: — Messrs. Petrie (convener), Hill, Gozen, Fleming, GoWj Harkness, He'ndry, Foo- ; ter, Braik, Mulgan, and White, to report on the suggested amendments to the regulations for inspection and examining of schools. Training and education of pupil teachers. — Messrs. Fitzgerald (convener), Mor- | ton, Spencer, Bakewell, Wyllie, Milne, Gray, and Watkin. i Matters relating to secondary education. — Messrs. Bell, Strachan, Bossence, Ritchie, Purdy, Crawford, Strong, Isaac, Brown, and Gill, I It was agreod that the other members of the conference should bo a general committee. Mr. Stuart was appointed convener. FREE PLACES. The conference then resolved itself into committee- to further consider the question of admission to free places at tho secondary schools. i At 12.30 progress was reported, a number of the regulations under discussion being referred to the Secondary Education. Committee for amendment. SCHOLARSHIPS.. Tho question of a refund of expenses or of a part of free railway passes to pupils attending the junior national scholarship and "free pJace" examinations or centralised examinations, was referred to the Secondary Education Committee. Inspector Mulgan (North Canterbury) moved "That tho junior national scholarship be awarded on the results of an examination in the subjects prescribed for the sixth standard >n the public schools syllabus." Thi3 was seconded oy Inspector Gozen (Otago) and carried unanimously. ■ At 12.45 p.m. the luncheon adjournment was taken.
