CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
ANNUAL REPORT. In tho annual report of the Council of the Wellington Chamber of Co:nmorce, to be presented at the annual meeting on Wednesday next, trade matters and the transactions of the chamber in the past year aro reviewed. Dealing with tho North Island .Main Trunk Lmc, ii is recorded that, taken altogether, good progress seems to have been maintained since last report, and the Minister of Public Works appears to have little doubt that the rails between Wellington and Auckland will bo connected by the end of next year. Several legislative matters had been dealt with, and these are summarised. On the question ,of • tariff revision, recommendations were submitted to tho Government. It is understood that a measure dealing with the whole tariff will be introduced in 1907. A resolution favouring a progressive policy in the management of our harbour was passed at the last annual meeting, and a porus.il of the work accomplished and in prospect, is stated in another part of the report, shows that no reasonable ground of complaint exists on this score. The representations of the chamber on this matter have met with success, the Government having acceded to the request that code addresses might be usod in telegrams within the colony as well as in cable messages. For some 3 r ears the chamber has adI'ooatcd the establishment by tho Govornmrnt of a station" for the prosecution of oxpsriment and research in connection with the dairy industry. The Government has at last given favourable consideration to this suggestion, and it is understood that steps arc being taken for the establishment of such an institution. The council is convinced that, in competent hands, tho work is calculated to prove of considerable advantage to this important industry. The need for an arrangement wheroby tho Sydney steamers will be despatched from Wellington uniformly on Friday, thus giving the colony a weekly mail via Sues, is urged, and tho complete disorganisation of the San Francisco servico dealt with. Other matters touched upon include tho need for increased Post Office accommodation, tho inconvenience caused by the closing of the railway goods shed at 4.30, harbour works and kindred subjects. Tn accordance with a rulo of the chamber, three members of the outgoing council are made Ineligible for re-elec-tion for ono year. On the present occasion the members so ineligible are Messrs. H. Beauchamp. A. de B. Brandon, and J. H. N. A. Burnes.
