QUEENSLAND FRUIT FLY.
LBV THLKGIUPE. — PEEBS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Yesterday, Mr. J. C. Blackmore, Government Pomologist, seized a quantity of Island oranges which had been shipped to Christchurch, infested with Queensland fruit fly. The fruit is part of a shipment which arrived in Auckland recently, and there found to be infested with fly. The oranges were picked over with the idea, of eliminating the affected ones, and the cases sent to Christchurch were supposed to be sound. In some instances, however, Mr. Blackmoro found that from thirty to forty per cent. of the fruit contained larvae of fly. The insect is one of the most dangerous and destructive of the soft fiuit pests, and its distribution in the colony is viewed with the keenest anxiety by orchardists. According to Mr. Blackmore the pest manifests its presence in fruit by a small spot. If the akin is cut away round the spot the grub insect will be found in the flesh, and after it has been alive in the fruit for a short time the whole moss becomes corrupt. The pest is extremely difficult to eradicate, and if it gets a hold in an orchard it is almost impossible to produce any fruit at all. WHANGAREI, This Day. Another case of Island oranges infected with the larvae of the Queensland fruit fly has been found in the Whangarei fruit store, and is being reshipped to Auckland. The Chairman of the Fruitgrowers' Association, has received a telegram from Captain Bi-oun, stating that Inspector Harnett is being sent here with orders to seize all infected fruit.
An announcement regarding "Tho only Cheapside," is inserted by Mr. W. Hall, crockery and fancy, goods dealer, Revans.atreet<
