COLONIAL DEFENCES.
im DEBATE IN THE FEDERAL PARLIAMENT. THE AUSTRALIAN SQUADRON. [PRESS ASSOCIATION.] MELBOURNE, 22nd June. The question of defence was discussed by the Federal Senate to-day. Senator T. Givens (Queensland.) urged the establishment of a factory for the manufacture of small-arms and ammunition. Senator Playfora, Minister of Defence, 6aid it depended on whether the quantity required would pay for the establishment of such a factory. The Government had tried to get New Zealand and the Admiralty to join, and negotiations with tho Admiralty were still being carried on. Senator M'Gregor (South Australia) favoured the construction of an Australian fleet. It was all very well to say that they had British security in I the matter of defence, but the flagship I Powerful had recently broken down, and the Pvramus was under repair. Those were the sort of ships tney relied on to protect Australia. They bad everything here in favour of constructing ships.
