MIRAMAR LIGHTIN6.

RIVAI* SYSTEMS. The manager of the Electric Light and Power Company wrote to the Miramar Borough Council last evening on the subject of lighting, stating that the company would require the Dorough to enter into an agreement for a term of years, as in the case of Melrose, Karori, and Onslow boroughs — the term of years to be four, with one year's notice of termination of contract by either sido after the expiry of the term. It was pointed out that the terms were lower than the company had offered' to any other borough, both in duration and price for lamp per annum. The Mayor said he thought the term was too long. Electric light had not, bo far, proved any too good. He suggested that iv shorter term, say three years »hould be suggested. Councillor Witt: What effect would that ba?e on the Gas Company? Tha Mayor : That is the question. He said tShe council was negotiating with the Gas Company, and it took longer to extend the gas mains than to extend electric lighting apparatus. Councillor Wardell ; Is there any pos- - eibility of making arracgementb with the city authorities. The Mayor: That is another matter which has to be considered. lam strongly against tying ourselves up to the Gas Company for three years. Councillor Wardell moved that a suggestion should be made fo' the company to enter into an agreement for three, years on the lines already suggested. This was duly seconded and carried. The Chairman of Directors of the Wellington Gas Company wrote stating thab the matter of extending the gas main into the Borough of Miramar was considered at a meeting of directors on Wednesday last, Pleasure had been expressed at the fact that they had the assurance of the Mayor that the council .would assist) them in every way to carry out the work, but they had received no legal authority so far. The Mayor said he did not quite understand the letter. He had assured the Gas Company that any necessary Bill would have the support of the council. It was decided to reply asking the Gas Company what it actually required in the matter.
