EASTBOURNE BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held yesterday, the Mayor, Mr. Bolton, presiding. The clerk was instructed to enquire into the facts of a case concerning certain alleged nuisances complained of by a ratepayer. The subcommittee set up in connection with the Harbour BoaTd's proposed bylaws for the Rona Bay wharf reported that the Secretary of the Harbour Board had been interviewed and the views of tlhe council placed before him, and that the matter would be dealt with at the next meeting of the board. A report upon the alleged pollution of the stream at Rona Bay stated that there was at present) no danger to health so long as the outlet to the sea was kept clear, and the clerk was instructed to take steps to ensure this being the case. The Public Works Committee brought down a comprehensive report recommending: (1) Thab a new road, 20ft wide, with a water table, If); in wjdth, and footpath, Bft wide, should be constructed as funds will pennjts, commencing at or near AVilliaons's store and running ijoutihwards, and that the footpath be provided with concrete kerbing; (2) that the opinion of an engineer be obtained a& to the levels, etc., of such proposed road; (3) that the committee be empowered to negotiate with owners of various creeks as to their contributing towards the cost of dealing with the storm water nuisance occasioned by such creeks; (4) that for the present a sy&lem of removal of nightsoil by carls be adopted, and that the clerk be. empowered to negotiate foi a contract); (5) that if funds will permit, 10 lamps elected as suitable points along the main road, and tnat the clerk be empowered to engage a lamplighter." The report was adopted, tihe question of engaging an engineer in t^nns of the report being left in the hands of the Mayor and Councillors Shortt aud Wood. A subcommittee was set up to inspect) and report upon suitable sited for a depot for sanitation purposes. The clerk was instructed to report upon tfhe appointment of a ranger for the borough. The Sand-drift Committee submitted its report, which was adopted with a slight alteration in the Urea lecommended to be proclaimed under the Act. The scheme devised for dealing with th 6 banddrift was approved, and the clerk instructed, in terms of tihe Act, to prepare a petition from the council to the Gover. nor, and to forward the- scheme to theMinister of Lands. The Bylaws Committee is to bring down a report to the next meeting of the council. The council then went into committee to consider the appointment of a town clerk, for which position there were seven applications. Mr. J. D. Avery was tflie successful applicant.
