THE FARMERS' CARNIVAL.

MANAWATU WINTER SHOW. FOURTH DAY. A FOOTBALL FESTIVAL. (From Our Special Reporter.) PALMERSTON, 22nd June. Interest in the Winter Show still continues, despite tho fact that to-day was the fourth consecutive day of the season, and the exhibition is not to be closed until to-morrow evening. The policy of the executive in admitting school children free of charge has been successful co far aa the little ones were concerned, for this morning again the scholars of the three State schools of Palmerston mustered in force, although not quite so strongly as did the country scholars yesterday. This morning boys and girls were to be eeen in the machinery hall, the horticultural annexe, the poultry section, and elsewhere, nearly every child being armad with a notebook, in which copious notes were taken. The notes weVe taken for the purposes of essays which are to be written during the school holidays Tdachera were with the scholars to-day, giving timely instruction. The new departure of interesting school children in Agricultural and Pastoral Suowa should mean muoh to the rising generation. From noon until 4 o'clock this afternoon the patrons of the show were given a football treat, per medium of intercollege contests. The first match played was between the junior teams of the Te Aute and the Wanganui Colleges. A fine open game resulted in a win for the Wanganui boys by 13 points to 8. The second match, between the senior teams of the two colleges named, provided a fine exposition, the Maoris from Hawkes Bay altogether outdaring the Wanganui youths in the open, passing, rushing, tricky methods of play. Result: Te Aute 23 points, Wanganui nil. The results of the show so far are better financially than were anticipated at the opening. On two days over £150 was taken at the gates, and to-day the takings were over £100.
