JAPANESE FANCY FAIR.
There was a large attendance yesterday afternoon at the opening ceremony and a throng of visitors in the evening at the Japanese Fair and sale of work organised by the workers of the three Congregational Churches in Wellington as a means of raising a substantial contribution to the fund for building a church suited to the growing needs of Newtown. At the opening ceremony speeches were made by the Revs. W. A. Evans (pastdr), J. R. Glasson, and J. Cocker (Chairman of the Wellington Soutji Ministers' Association), and Messrs. A. Lindsay and B. L. Thomas. The schoolrom in Con-stable-street presented a bright and gay appearance, the fancy costumes of the young people blending with the decorated stalls. The sum of £55 was taken during the afternoon and evening. A large marquee erected upon the adjoining ground served the purpose of a concert) chamber for the evening entertainment, when the programme was contributed to by Mr. fjawtell (imitations, etc.), Misses Head Wolfe, Cowan, Messrs. Burge and Hutchens (a charade), Miss Eggers (recitation), and Mr. Callaghan (6ong). The following were the principals and, assistants at tile various stfalls: Terrace stalls, Mesdames Glasson, Lindsay, P. W. Miller, Osborne, T. Quinton, Holdsworth, Lankshear, Dumbbell, Misses Cummins, Raymond, Quinton, Morton, A. and B. Littlejohn, Milner, Toms, Home, Lindsay, O. Glasson, Macklin (2), West (3), On-, B. Smith, Miller Mr. R. Lankshear, Master E. Edwards; Courtenayplace stalls, Mesdames Aspland, Martin, Russell, Lewis,- Remington, Ludwig, Misses Bedford, Bowden, Campbell, A. Mitcaff, A. Rowntree; Newtown stalls, Mesdames Evans, Mills, Anker, Hearn, Cowan, D. I^iller, Owen, Roberts, Spreadbury, Johnson, Chegwidden, Luke, Misses Thomas (2) E. M- Johnson, Mason (3), S. Revell, Bold, Hearn, Ray (2), Wolfe Bramley (2), Mills (2) ; Sunday School stall, Mesdames Eggers and Page ; Young Men's stall, Messrs. A. Burge and J. Beaglehole. This evening there is to be a variety entertainment provided by a party of friends from the Terrace Church. The Courtenay-place party provides a concert to-morrow evening.
