THE HOLIDAYS. WHERE TO SPEND NEW YEAR'S DAY.

In our advertising columns will bo I found details of the many arrangements made and enterprises organised for holi-day-makers on Monday (Sew Year's Day). The Corporation has made comprehen siye and special arrangements for coping with the large traffic expected on tho tramway service, not only for the busy times of tha day, but also in the early morning, to erlable citizens who are going out of town to catch ttheir trains. The summer meeting of the Wairarapa Racing Club is to be held on Monday and Tuesday at Tauhercnik'au, and there will also be race meetings at Waikanae and at Bulls. For these and other outings the Government Railway Department and the Manawatu Railway Company liavo made special provision itor the expected traffic. The combined friendly societies of Wellington, Petone, and Hutt have organised a picnic and sports meeting for Monday at the Bellevue Gardens, which evem promises to attract a large gathering. A very interesting programme has been prepared for the occasion, and there will be a procession in connection with it at Petone and at the Hutt. The Wellington Steam Ferry Company and the Miramar Ferry Company's steamers will be running excursions across the harbour all day, and the Union Steam Ship Company's Mararoa is to run an excursion to Picton. For Monday evening the attractions offered are many and varied. In the afternoon and evening the Knight-Jeffries Dramatic Company is to give performances of "A Royal Divorce" ; in the Theatre Royal Fuller's Entertainers will also give two performances; Czerny the Magician ia to present a popular programme at His Majesty's Theatre; Mr. Dix will continue his Carnival Promenade Concerts at the Skating Rink; and there will be a "social" in the Druids' Hall. In addition to the above engagements, the Canterbury- Wellington cricket contest will be continued on the Basin Reserve, and the tennis championship tournament will be continued on the College grounds.
