PERSONAL MATTERS.

Lieut.-Colonel Loveday, officer in charge of the Public School Cadets of the colony, has returned from the South. The only members of the Cabinet at present in Wellington are. the Attorney-Gene-ral (Hon. A. Pitt) and the Minister for Customs (Hon. C. H. Mills). Mr. Moschini has been appointed conductor of the Public Schools Cadet Band, vice Mr. C. Thompson, who has accepted the position of bandmaster of the band at the Boys' Training Farm at Weraroa. Mr. Basil Stocker, who has been in charge of the Examination Branch of the Education Department for some years, has retired from the Civil Service. Before leaving he received a presentation from the officers of tho Department. Miss Nellie Stewart, the well-known and popular Australian actress, who is about to enter upon, an extended dramatic tour of the United States of America, left Auckland for San Francisco by the Sierra yesterday. Mr. Edward Reeves, teacher of elocution in the University of Adelaide, is at present in Wellington, and wilL remain here for about a'month. Mr. Reeves, who is a cousin of Mr. C. F. Reeves, of Island Bay, with, whom he is staying, was a resident of New Zealand 28 years ago. The late Mr. George Fossstte, who was drowned at Kaitoke on Boxing Day, was a familiar figure in every enterprise undertaken by tho Wellington Young Men's Christian Association. The Association's Hockey Club, of which he- was Secretary and Treasurer, owes its vitality and strength to his energy. For twelve months ho made a capable Secretary of the Literary and Debating Club, and he also took a prominent part in the affairs of the Gymnasium and Amateur Athletic Clubs, the Building Committee, and tho Board of Management. A Press Association message from Sydney announces the death of Mr. Viotor J. Daley, the popular and well-known poet and journalist. Mr. Daley, who was just over forty years of age, had been in very poor health for several years, a temporary respite only being afforded by a trip made last year to the South Sea Islands. The deceased was born in Ireland, but spent nearly, the whole of his life in Australia, and was a writer by instinct. As a writer of verse he stands amongst the first flight of Australian composers, and his prose work was always interesting. He was the aufhor of a book of poetry, "At Dawn and Dusk," and he was the most frequent contributor to the Sydney Bulletin of all the writers of the Common- I wealth.
