ROSE AND CARNATION CLUB. SECOND ANNUAL SHOW.

. The Mayor (Hon. T. W. Hislop) this afternoon opened the second annual Summer Show of the Wellington Rose and Carnation Club in the Town Hall. The commodious floor has been fully occupied by the many exhibits sent in, and the wholo display gives tht hall tho appearance of a veritable garden, glowing with the choicest blooms and brilliant with the brightest greens of fernery and conservatory Nature has been aided by the artistic touches of ladies who art competitors for the prizes offered foj best-decorated tables. Tho entrio* for this contest are more numerous thaiv ever. There are tables in the scheme of decorating on which roses, sweet peas, scarlet geraniums, carnations, poj, piec, and nasturtiums play a prominent and more or less artistic part. Miss tMurray, of Lambton-quay, has a beaut, fully-decorated table on exhibition, and Mr. Fox has another table display of peas, pansies, .cactus dahlias, and gaillardias. Adjacent to this department of the show are the seven noble-looking entries for the championship amongst roses; and another adjacent table col tains a few flowers from Mr. Papworth's collection of orchids, including the gloriously-coloured cattleya mossrei and the 'quaint Renanthera Imschootiana. Roses are present in plentiful profusion, carnations' of all the primary shade* and cultured tones, pot plants are displayed at every turn; ferns and foliage are there for competition and for exhibition only; sweet yeas and pansies are present in great variety, and amateurs as well as professionals have sent of the best that garden and hot-house can produce The champion rose was exhibited by an amateur, Mrs. J. G-. VVilson, of Bulk. The flower awarded this honour is' a lovely "Mildred Grant" bloom, with grand substance. The gold medal in the open section for flowering and foliage plants grouped for effect was awarded to an amatenr, 'Mr. G. A. Chapman, of the Hutt. Mr. Chapman's show of caladiums in the grouping are particu larly fine, and the whole display is one of the features of the show. The prize for the two best roses was won by J. Weightman and Son, of Palmerston North, with two pink Hainan Cochet. Mr. F. H. Evans and Son's gold medal for the best Sybrid tea roses (amateurs) was won by Mr. T. Sutherland, of Wellington.
