IMMIGRATION. THE DAILY MAIL'S ALLEGATIONS.
{PRESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received December 19, 9.17 a.m.) LONDON, 18th December. Mr. Coghlan, Agent-General for New South Wales, in a letter to the Daily Mail, ridicules the allegation of that newspaper that an attempt was made by ■the New South Wales Government to muzzle its correspondent at Sydney. Mr. Coghlan contends that during September, as the Mail declares, its correspondent truly stated that several farmers — namely, three-4eft New South Wales for Chili ; but this waa apparently transmitted in the Mail of 29th September into a significant and sustained exodus. Mr. Coghlan adduces many proofs of the sincerity of his Government in the matter of immigration, and denies that the Labour Party ip any State of the Commonwealth has declared war on the God of Capital and his children. Tho Mail, in reply, maintains that its correspondent was threatened. It quotes I a telegram senb on 28th September as significant of the sustained exodus, and I protests against the suggestion that because the Mail did not quote the whole message it admitted that the portion omitted was concocted in London. The paper says Mr. Coghlan ought to tender an ample apology for a gross breach of i fairness in suggesting that part of the telegram was concocted in London.
