RIFLE SHOOTING. DOINGS AT TRENTHAM.
There was a muster of about two hundred' marksmen at Trentham on Satur* day,' riot withstanding the non-representa-; tion of some companies that usually, muster strongly. The Submarine Miners;" had a day off as compensation -for thei^' arduous two weeks' work at the annuali training camp, the College Rifles Wete> away at Pdlhilt'fl Ghlly to do volley fir-,; ing, and the Hutt Valley Rifles (another" corps that usually muster* strongly aft Trontham) was undergoing field training^ at Mason's Gardens udder the guidance,! of Staff-Sergt.-Majdf Colcloughi • Thoj weather was bright and cheerful, but the" usual "corkscrew" wind that makes explanation ensy for all bad marksmen wdfl in evidence, and quite a large nunlber of misses were made at the longer range. Firing look place at 200 yards and 500 yards, the majority of the companies firing seven shots per mail at each range. Sergt. Jnckson, of. the City Rifles, made the good scoi'o of 63 (30 and 33), a performance almost equalled by Rifleman J. Burns, of Karml, whose long range figures were, however, less (32, 31). D Battery had only a small muster, but B(jme good scores were put on. Gunner Plimmer, with ten shots at each range, made 90 (45 and 45). Sergt. Bunckenburg. The parade state of competitors Was as follows:— D Battery 14, Engineers 20, City Rifles 18, Wellington Guards 22, Kelburne Rifles 12, Civil Service Rifles 8, Post and Telegraph Rifles 25, Zpalandia Rifles 25, Highland Rifles 29, Karori Rifle Club" 19, staff 2 ; total 194. Following are details of the shooting : — D BATTERY. A trophy competition was fired, ten Bhots per man at each range.
WELLINGTON ENGINEERS. The Wellington Engineers Competed for Mrs. Quin's trophy. A Class.
CITY RIFLES. The City Rifles defined last Saturday's weather conditions as "variable corkscrew wind, from right to four degrees left." A competition was fired for Captain Duthie'S troplby, all the scores made being either medium or much better.
♦Ammunition prize. JRange prize. There is one more match to be fired for the trophy. At present Sergt Jackson heads the aggregates with 229 points, Sallowed by A. J. Jackson 224, Chandler 223, Feasey 222, Jackson, 6enr., 220, Newberry 220, Davis 217, Moran 216, Baker 215. WELLINGTON GUARDS. The final of five competitions for four trophies was fired on Saturday. The first prize (value £2) was won by Private C. Guy with 279 points. The other three trophies (valued at £1 ss, 10s and 10s! respectively) were won by Private Richards 278, Private Lacey 276, and Private Love 272. The B Cla&s trophy (presented by Mr. C. Hales) was won by Lieut Smith.
KELBURNE RIFLES. A competition for company trophies was fired by the Kelburne Rifles.
i. POST AND TELEGRAPH RIFLES. The shooting progress that is being made by the Post and Telegraph Rifles was exemplified by the 1 fact that a six-months' i service recruit topped the competition on Saturday with 62 points, 61 of tfhltih were tnftde from the rifle. The shooting wtts for Lieut., Hartou's trophy 1 and for cash prizes.
KARORI RIFLE CLUB. Tile company's secretary described the weather conditions as ''light, uneven wind with changing light at times." The shooting or the club Was remarkable for the fact thab ohly five points separated fourteen uten.
CIVIL SERVICE RIFLES. The Civil Service Rifles indulged" in class-rlrihgj seVeii shots at each rnhge : —
HIGHLAND RIFLES. The Highlanders cbmpleted their N6. 2 cbmpetitloh for trophies presented by their Officers. Conditions: Two matches ; ranges, 200, 500, 600, and 700 yards ; seven shots at each rahge.
