♦ [DT riLEORAPH. — MIES9 ASSOCIATIOK.] NAPIER, This Day. The Ilawkes Bay Presbytery has nominated the Rev. IJr. Sicjey as Moderator for New Zealand in 1906." The Presbytery, on the casting vote of the Moderator, recommended adherents to vote no license at the coming poll. Exception was taken to the motion on the ground that such matters should be left to individual conscience. A defence raised in the Arbitration Court this morning to an action for breach of award was that the firm charged had ceased to exist, and a new firm had taken its place. Speaking generally, the President of the Court (Mr. Justice Chapman) said : A man can't get rid of his liability for past breaches of award by dissolving his firm. Its niembeis aro severally liable for their breaches. The new-born fitm is not liable." Mr. S. Brown (employers' 1 epresentative) pointed out that a unionist did not get rid of liability by leaving his union. Tho Education Act Amendment Bill, providing for popular election of Education Boards and increases of teachers' salaries, was debated in tho Houso yesterday. Tho Commissioners Act Amendment Bill, removing a technical difficulty against appointing Supreme Court Judges ,to enquire into tho audit system, was pnt through all stages. The ninendlnonts made by the Legislative Council in the Eastbourne Borough Bill were agreed to, which means that that muchdebated measure has at last got through all its troubles.
