♦ MISS JESSIE MACLACHLAN. In another column the Mayor invites those 'citizens who favour extending a public reception to the Scottish vocalist, j Miss Jessie Machchlan, to meet in his dffice at the Municipal Chambers to-mor-row. MLss Maclachlan, who is at present appearing with her concert party in Christchurch, is to arrive in Wellington next week, and gives her first concert in the Town Hall next Monday evening. She had gieat receptions in the Australian centres and Dunedin, where the Scots rallied around their gifted countrywoman with enthusiasm. Miss Maclachlan has the ' reputation of being an exceptionally good singer of the famous ballads oil Scotland. An entertainment which should prove very - attractive will Le given by Mr. Trezise in St. Mark's Schoolroom this evening in aid of St. Thomas's Church. Then will be fancy dancing, and a "School Tragedy/ "Don Quixote," as ■well as a variety of musical selections, etc. The third annual smoke concert of the Albion Cricket Club will be held at Mawson's Rooms to-night. Very complete arrangements have been made in connection with the Wellington Physical Training School's annual carnival in tho Opera next Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. The programme prepared is a most attractive ono, and the Committee promiees a display which will be unique in many respects.
The riflo shooting season is to be opened on Saturday next at Trentham rifle range, when representatives of nea"rly every corps in Wellington will participate in the practice. A muster of over two hundred marksmen, is anticipated. ,
