A series of earthquake shocks lasting nine hours Avas felt at Macao (a Portugii€ss settlement situated on an island at the .mouth of the Canton River, China). ,
Slight shocks were also felt at Hongkong, and one at Chamounix (a celebrated resort for tourists in the Department of Haute-Savoie, France).
At the latter place the walls of one of the churches cracked, and the congregation fled in panic, expecting the building to collapse.

MANILA, 14th August. American surgeons here believe they ha\e discovered an X-rays cure for leprosy. In six months they have treated twenty-five cases, which have apparently been cured.
NUMBER OF FRESH CASES REPORTED.

One hundred and five new cases of yellow fever have been reported in New Orleans.
On Saturday a shipment of bananas was stopped to prevent infection.
