R. Blair) and otheis. All Lovers of Religious Freedom are urged to Rally. TO THE ELECTORS OF MANAWATU. T ADHSS and GENTLEMEN,— In an- *-* nouncing my candidature as an Independent Liberal for this important Electorate at the forthcoming November election, *ud in soliciting your suffrages on that occasion, I do so labouring under one disadvantage. ' Unlike some of my opponents I have not previously been a member of the House of Representatives, and if you do me the honour to accept my services at the November eleotion you have to'take me to a certain extent on' trust. But, Ladies and- Gentlemen, to everything there must be a beginning. The vacancies left by death and resignation could never in* the long run bo filled up, if the newcomers were for ever refused a hearing and a trial. ' What, therefore, I have to seek to convince you of, since I have no past services to plead, is that among newcomers I need not ba ranked as unworthy of your trust and confidence. I wish to impress on tho electors that I support tbe great bulk of tho Government's polioy, but I reserve to myself tho right of voting independently of cause or parcy. In my coming address, which will take place shortly throughout the electorate, it will be patent to you what are the several planks of my platform. I may here state that I fully recognise that, the future government of this colony requires indisputable energy and progressive enterprise combined with prudence and economy. My qualifications for the position of your representative, apart from the right of every elector to offer himself _as a candidate for your suffrages, are, I venture to hope, sufficient. For many years I havo occupied responsible positions in' the New Zealand Civil Service, ending with the appointment of Government Life Insurance Commissioner, and I have since held high business appointments in London and New York. This experience, it cannot be disputed, must fit its subject for dealing in a spirit of forethought with questions of legislative and administrative measures conduoivo to the benefit of this Manawatu electorate and of the colony as a whole. — I have the honour to be, Ladies and Gontlemon, Your obedient servant, !
