N SALARIES INCREASED. [PBES9 ASSOCIATION.] OTTAWA, 18th July. Owing to the buoyancy of the revenue the Dominion Parliament has approved" the Government's propsal to increase the salary of Sir Wilfrid Laurier (the Premier) to £2400, and to give the Leader of the Opposition £1400. The salaries of members of the House of Commons and Senators are raised to £400. Provision is made for ex-Minis-ters who have served five consecutive years as heads of departments to receive pensions of £1250. THE DEFENCES. (Received July 19, 9.32 a.m.) OTTAWA, 18lh July. In pursuance of the nuw Imperial defence policy the Halifax defences will be banded to Canada on the Ist September, when the British troops will bo withdrawn. The Imperial authorities will administer Esquimault until next July.
