PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL

The Petone Borough Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. G. London) presiding. All Councillors were present. A deputation, headed by Mr. R. S. Ctinliffe, waited on the Council to make representations as to the disabilities under which the residents in the low-lying parts of the borough suffered through inadequate drainage facilities. A petition signed by 81 ratepayers and householders was presented urging the Council to tako steps to remedy the matter. It also entered a protest against prior consideration being given a tramway scheme, which would only benefit a small portion of the residents. The Mayor explained some of the reasons/ that had caused the seeming delay, the chief of which was that no scheme will be complete without co-operation of the Hutt. The Council recognised the urgency ot the deputation's representations, which would be given effect to with the least possible delay. Messrs. Seaton and Sladden's plans oi' Emerson-etreet extension subdivision were approved. It was decided to iniorin Mr. P. R. Davidson, Middle Waiwetu-road, Hutt, that the Council could not see its way to put in any further mains until there was a greater prospect of making interest on the outlay. The Secretary' of the Wellington Harbour Board wrote that he thought it probable the Board would ask the Petone Council to extinguish' all rights to the beach between tho esplanade and highwater mark, and he suggested it was desirable in the Parliamentary powers being sought, that power should bo given the Petone Council tv deal with this matter. Tho Hutt Town Clerk requested an early conference to deal with important subjects in which the two boroughs werer jointly interested. A conference was fixed for next Friday evening. Councillor Wakeham moved that no further applications be granted for water services other than for domestic purposes. Councillor Macfarkufe seconded, but the proposal was lost after discussion. Councillor Hastings was appointed to the Recreation Gibund, Waterworks, Sanitary, and Fire Brigade Committees. The question of the method of defraying the cost of the sanitary service was again discussed in consequence of receipt of advice from the Municipal Association Solicitor that the sanitary rate not being specially exempted must be levied on the unimproVed rating system. On the motion of Councillor Hastings, the matter was referred to the Borough Solicitor. The motion fixing a charge for two sanitary pans with every building permit issued was rescinded. One pan only is to be charged for. Tho by-laws as revised and amended were adopted. Thb Council rose at ll p.tri.
