Mr. Austen Chamberlain, Chancellor of the Exchequer, speaking at Rugby, said in order to remedy tho loss of foreign trade Britain mu^t abandon needless fetters, and resume her old freedom to make bargains with foreigners. She must adopt preference with the colonies, and must retaliate against foreigners refusing to give reasonable treatment to British commerce. A Joint Committee ol the Dorsetshire Farmers' . Club advocates preferential treatment in respect to colonial flour, but not as regards barley^ meat, or dairy produce. The committee considers a duty of 2s on wheat would not materially increase Britain's production.
