The new portion of the Anglican Cathedral, comprising the northern and southern transcept and chance], Was formally opened this morning and consecrated by the Primate, Bishop Nevill. The Bishops of Wellington, Waiapu, and Nelson were also pre&ent, and about sixty Diocesan clergy attended. The congregation numbered about two thousand, of uhom fifteen hundred we're seated. The Dean and Chapter formally presented a petition for the. consecration, which Was granted by the Primate, who signed Xh% deed of consecation. Holy Communion was celebrated by the Primate with the assistance of the Bishops. The offertory in aid of the building fund amounted to £410 6s 3d. The Bishop of Wellington preached at this evening's service to a large congregation. The practice of cutting down, fern and nikau trees for the purpose of decorating halls of amusement is one to be deprecated, as the scenic spots in and aroiind our towns are only too rapidly disappearing through the progress of settlement. At Palmerston yesterday three young men were ordered to pay £10 damages for having removed nikau palms and fern fronds from a settler's property. The Magistrate considered the damage done was more than nominal. When cut down the beauty of the trees only lasted for a night, whereas standing they are a sdurce of continued pleasure to all who delight in the beauties of nature. A sentiment in which all lovers, of nature's handiwork will agree. SOFT WHITE HANDS IN A SINGLE NIGHT. Soak tthe hands on retiring in a strong;, hot lather of Cuticura Soap.
